Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a structured and goal-oriented therapeutic modality that uses evidence-based techniques and strategies to treat many mental health disorders including depression, anxiety disorders, substance use disorders, and severe mental illness.
Research studies suggest that CBT can significantly improve daily functioning and quality of life. Some benefits of CBT include decreased stress and anxiety, managing and coping with emotional challenges, improved mood and increased self-esteem and confidence.
CBT is a form of psychotherapy that was developed by psychiatrist Dr. Aaron T. Beck to help individuals identify and change negative thought patterns and behavior. CBT is based on the idea that our thoughts, feelings and behavior are interconnected and influence one another.
CBT has been extensively studied and has been found to be just as effective as other forms of psychotherapy and psychiatric medications. Over the years different forms of CBT have been developed to address specific challenges such as Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT) and Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT).
CBT utilizes practical strategies to identify and break negative thought patterns and behavior which leads to improved mood and overall life satisfaction. The first step is learning to identify automatic negative thoughts and how these influence mood and behavior. Once identified, clients can begin to challenge and change negative thought patterns and behavior leading to more helpful and effective choices. Clients will often be assigned reading and asked to practice new learned strategies and coping skills.
CBT can treat a range of mental health issues and is most commonly used for depression, anxiety disorders, substance use, PTSD, and phobias.
CBT sessions include working with your therapist to identify issues in your life and changes that you wish to make. You will learn to identify how your thoughts, emotions and behavior are linked and how to break the cycle. Sessions are tailored to each individual to address specific challenges and can include learning and practicing new skills that challenge and change negative thought cycles.
If you are struggling and want to learn how to better manage life’s challenges, CBT can help. Please contact us for a free consultation to see if CBT is a good fit for you.
