Immigration Evaluations in California

We offer in-person evaluations at our Escondido location or virtually to anyone in California.

At InPsych Center, we provide professional immigration evaluations to support individuals navigating the complexities of the U.S. immigration process. Our assessments help document psychological and emotional factors that may be crucial in legal proceedings. We work closely with immigration attorneys to ensure thorough, high-quality evaluations that strengthen our clients’ cases.

What is an Immigration Evaluation?

An immigration evaluation is a comprehensive psychosocial assessment conducted by a licensed mental health professional. This specialized assessment helps answer critical questions regarding an individual’s mental, psychological, emotional, cognitive, and sometimes physical, relational, educational, and financial health. The resulting report is submitted, along with other supporting documents, to the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) via the individual’s immigration attorney.

Immigration evaluations can play a crucial role in strengthening an individual’s legal case. In many situations, they provide essential documentation to support a claim, whether to demonstrate extreme hardship, the effects of abuse, or psychological trauma. In some cases, USCIS may even require such evaluations as part of the immigration process.

Who Needs an Immigration Evaluation?

Immigration evaluations are typically recommended by an immigration attorney handling a case. The individual requiring the evaluation may be:

  • A citizen or permanent resident spouse or relative
  • An individual seeking to adjust their legal status in the U.S.
  • Someone facing removal and needing to demonstrate hardship if they must return to their country of origin

Types of Immigration Cases We Support

At InPsych Center, we conduct evaluations for a variety of immigration cases, including:

  • Hardship Waivers – Assessing extreme hardship for a U.S. citizen or legal permanent resident if their relative is required to leave the country.
  • VAWA (Violence Against Women Act) – Evaluating individuals who have experienced intimate partner violence (available to both women and men).
  • U-Visa – Assessing the psychological and emotional impact on individuals who have been victims of a crime.
  • T-Visa – Evaluating individuals who have been victims of human or labor trafficking.
  • Asylum Cases – Assessing physical or psychological harm risks if the individual is forced to return to their country of origin.

What to Expect During an Immigration Evaluation

Individuals meet one-on-one with our licensed mental health professional, typically for a single session. During the evaluation, clients can expect:

  • A discussion of their case and personal experiences
  • Completion of mental health screeners for conditions such as depression, anxiety, and trauma
  • A thorough review of any supporting documents provided

After the session, our clinician carefully analyzes the information, scores the screeners, and compiles a comprehensive report. This confidential report is then sent directly to the referring immigration attorney.

How to Prepare for an Immigration Evaluation

There is little preparation required for an immigration evaluation. Clients are encouraged to bring any supporting documents that may be relevant to their case, but no additional preparation is necessary.
