Four Things Every New Mom Needs to Know

If you (or someone you know) are pregnant or recently gave birth
(even if it is not your first baby), PLEASE read on!

Here at InPsych Center, our commitment is to support pregnant and postpartum women, educate about MOTHERHOOD MYTHS, and help women get the care needed in order to be the best they can be as a woman and a mother.

Becoming a mother to a new baby, whether it is through giving birth, surrogacy, or adoption, is one of THE most challenging transitions you will ever go through. You are not alone. Here are a few things to help you on your journey:

  1. Breastfeeding. Yes, experts say that “breast is best” but if you cannot breastfeed or choose not to breastfeed, that is okay too. Breastfeeding can be difficult, and it is not always what is right for every mom. It does NOT make you less of a mother if you bottle feed your baby! You are doing what is right for you and your child…after all, it’s a personal decision!
  2. Sleep. Sleep deprivation can be HARD, like really, really hard. The old adage that says “sleep when the baby sleeps” is not a joke! It’s important to rest when you can and to let others take over duties of cooking, dish washing and laundry. Or…gasp…let some chores slide a bit or a lot! Please also see our article on the importance of sleep.
  3. Fresh Air and Movement. Getting fresh air each and every day can make a huge impact on your mood. As much as you don’t feel like it, getting out for a short stroll or a walk to the mailbox can do wonders for your well-being. Take advantage of your baby’s being small and easy to transport. And remember, a little bit of movement goes a long way!
  4. Support. Get support! Raising children was not meant to be done alone, and there is not one mother out there who can do it all! Join a mom’s support group, lactation group, or a baby play date meet up. Having others around who are experiencing similar struggles can be immensely supportive, not to mention a great way to meet new friends!
